The Future

Why do you teach?
What is the purpose of education?

In 10 years, over 50% of the jobs that exist are expected to be jobs that do not currently exist.  Almost all technology will be completely different in 10 years.  We will have discovered a ton of new factual information in the next 10 years.  In this time, we will also disprove a fair amount of the misconceptions we currently think of as facts.  Considering that we have almost no idea what the future 10 years from now will look like...... how should we be educating students so that they are prepared for this future?

Prepare them for success!!!

  • Is it important for them to know effective strategies on how to "LEARN new information"?
  • Is it important for them to learn communication skills?
  • Is it important for them to learn collaboration skills?
  • Is it important for them to learn more about technology and adapt to its changes?
  • Is it important for them to be creative?
  • Is it important to teach them how to set goals?
  • Is it important to teach them how to "be happy"?
  • Is it important to help them find their passions?
  • Is it important to teach them how to be self-directed learners?
  • Is it important to have them memorize a bunch of information that can easily be found on Google only long enough so that they can pass a quiz or test?

I would argue that all of these are very important, except for the last bullet point.

Why does it seem, however, that 90%+ of the curriculum in education is based solely on the last bullet point?

Do you do a good job of teaching all of these other bullet points?  I know that I need to do a better job of it, however, it is often difficult to find the time considering all of the content and data-entry work that I need to do these days.  If anyone has great lessons or ideas for any of these, PLEASE, share them.

Education is already could be so awesome!

  1. Awesome, again. You've inspired me to be even dorkier than I am now (as my wife would say). Your thoughts are spot on! Why is it that connected educators all have same fiery passion for changing education to benefit the students?! Eventually we've got to start winning.

  2. Thank you, Derek! I am also confused as to why there are so many fiery and passionate educators advocating for change, yet it is so slow to progress. I think that tradition, politics, and the work necessary to put forth are holding it back.

Thank you for your insight. Let me know if there is any way I can help with anything or collaborate on anything!
